10 Questions with Melinda Pearson
1. How did you first learn about Waterplay? What made you want to become a Waterplayer?
I first learned about Waterplay when working as the Business Development Manager at Water Technology, Inc — Aquatic planners, designers, and engineers. I became industry friends with the team and as I learned more about Waterplay — their passion for the value of children’s play, their culture, and commitment to the industry — it made me want to be a Waterplayer.
I had an intimate understanding of a design firm’s unique and specific needs from manufacturers and knew that I could become that resource and liaison between a manufacturer and the design community and bring value to both sides.
2. Tell us about your new role at Waterplay? What three words would you use to describe it?
My new role at Waterplay was developed to better serve the design community during the planning and design stages of projects. I understand the aquatic marketplace and a design firms specific needs during the planning and design phases of a project – including the immediacy and thoroughness of the responses that they require. I work with designers worldwide on feature layouts, Masterplanning, budgeting, specification support and technical coordination.
It is an incredibly fun role as I get to interact with the top designers in the industry and help them find solutions to their project needs, brainstorm, and have fun.
Three words? Fun – Interaction – Solutions!
3. What have you gained from working at Waterplay?
I have gained a broader respect for the manufacturing industry and all of the coordination, skill, planning, logistics, marketing, and technical support that is required to serve a marketplace. I have gained the utmost respect for all of my colleagues and the challenges that they face and overcome every day. We are all here for the same goal of creating a global community connected through play and social experiences, and we all keep this in mind as we move forward each day.
4. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
I want to learn to live more in the moment!
5. What’s one thing you couldn’t live without?
My curiosity — without it life would be incredibly boring!
6. What is one thing you cannot resist?
7. If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet?
Jim Henson. “The most sophisticated people I know — inside they are all children”
8. If you could pick one superpower, what would it be?
9. Where is the best place you’ve traveled to and why?
Honestly, the best place I ever traveled to was Girl Scout Camp in the 1970’s and 80’s. Camp helped shape who I am today – where I developed my love of nature, it established how I “play”, it gave me self-confidence and an independent spirit, and showed me the importance of camaraderie, team work and compassion for others.
10. Tell us three things most people don’t know about you …
I’m a certified yoga teacher, I am training my German Shepherd in the sport of Schutzhund, and I am one of the directors for the US National Snow Sculpting competition!
